Several compounds, vying for the title of “the little pink pill”, are in different stages of development and some of them may hit the market as soon as this year. Here’s what every woman needs to know. The most common form of female sexual dysfunction is a so called Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD). Hypoactive women describe their symptoms as “declining interest in sex”, “loss of spark”, “always not in the mood”, “lack of passion”, or “being unexcited”, regardless of whom they are with and how long they’ve been together. They are may be in loving relationships, they can perform in bed and even reach orgasms, but they do it mostly in order “not to disappoint my partner”.

That’s probably a lot safer and just as effective in getting women in the mood. I certainly don’t mean to dismiss women’s concerns over their diminishing sex drives; but the social and psychological contexts of sexual desire are far more complex than disease mongering and pill popping suggest. Move over, little blue pill, we ladies now have our own version of – the little pink pill. For decades, we’ve been inundated (sometimes, even comically) with commercials and information about male sexual function and sexual health. While this is all well and good, very little attention was paid to the female counterpart to sexual well-being and the fact that women sometimes need a little help too. If you experience one of these symptoms, you may be suffering from HSDD. In 2013, New York Times suggested that up to 30% of otherwise healthy women between the ages of 20 and 60 are affected. Sprout Pharmaceutical and Palatin Technologies, two companies actively developing medications to treat HSDD, report 43% and 12% respectively. In any case, we are talking about well over ten million women in the USA alone. Many women are concerned about “loss of spark”, but are unaware of the fact that HSDD is a disorder. Despite a great deal of distress and tension caused by loss of interest in sex, many women either consider declining desire “a fact of life” or are uncomfortable discussing their libido even with their doctors.

Low desire is a medical condition and should not be ignored.

In 1998 a small diamond-shaped pill called Viagra was released to the mainstream market. Christened “the little blue pill”, it has changed the lives of millions of men, effectively liberating them from erectile dysfunction, one of the worst fears of any male. Viagra was quickly joined by Cialis and several other drugs, bringing billions of dollars to the pharma industry. Yet while the male market appears to be served quite well viagra medicine (by some accounts, there are over 20 FDA-approved drugs to treat ED), not a single compound has been officially approved to treat sexual dysfunction in women. But this is likely to change – and soon. Your condition may be caused by treatable factors, such as depression, or side effects from other medications you are taking. Seek medical help for the sake of your own health and the health of your relationships. As of now, there are no FDA-approved medications to treat HSDD, but several companies are in the race to bring their compounds to market. These drugs have been undergoing extensive clinical trials to prove their effectiveness and safety.

The results are promising, but highly individual. Anecdotally, some participants in recent trials conducted at Boston Clinical Trials reported dramatic improvement in their sexual appetites. Yet others experienced limited or no change. The studies were double-blinded, i.e., neither the patient, nor the staff members knew whether a person received the investigational drug or a placebo.

In 2014, FDA identified HSDD as one of 20 disease areas of high priority. Given the FDA focus and the promise of a multibillion market, there is little doubt that the treatment for HSDD will become a reality soon.

But prescribing a potentially dangerous daily drug ignores the social and personal aspects of sexual desire, which might not lend itself to an easy pharmaceutical fix. As sex researchers Barbara Mintzes and Leonore Tiefer wisely point out, “If a woman is depressed, is going through tough times with her aging parents or has just had a baby and is sleep-deprived, she can easily feel less interested in sex than previously. If her partner is unsympathetic or pressures her, distress would be expected. Defining unequal interest in sex between partners as a female dysfunction is hardly a boon for women’s equality.” Tellingly, people on both sides of the debate agree that flibanserin has potentially serious side effects that should not be discounted. It can cause low blood pressure, drowsiness, and fainting, and trials showed an increased risk of breast cancer tumors in mice.

And most disturbing: it shouldn’t be taken with hormonal birth control. That restriction eliminates most of the drug’s target audience! Nor should it be taken with alcohol. It is now being offered by Sprout Pharmaceuticals as a treatment for hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD), defined as “persistently or recurrently deficient or absent sexual fantasies and desire for sexual activity,” leading to distress and interpersonal difficulties. Critics have challenged the validity of the HSDD diagnosis, calling it a “textbook case of disease mongering by the pharmaceutical industry.” Opponents have also contended that the potential side effects outweigh the modest effects. Studies reported that women taking the drug experienced one more sexually satisfying event per month while the most common short-term side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, and fainting. There is also the potential for adverse effects when flibanserin is taken with alcohol or oral contraceptives. This week Mad in America featured an Op-Ed by three doctoral students at UMass Boston which describes the ways in which “disease mongering,” conflicts of interest, and commercialization contributed to the creation and approval of Flibanserin. These include a boxed warning that highlights the risks of low blood pressure and fainting in patients who drink alcohol while taking the drug, as well as a requirement that doctors complete a training course before being allowed to prescribe it.

Whether it’s simply a low sex drive, experienced by roughly 33% of women, or something that manifests physically like painful intercourse, affecting a whopping 75% of women during their lifetime, female sexual dysfunction is an issue that is finally getting the attention it deserves. So what does this little pink pill (referred to as “female viagra” and called Flibanserin) do? Because a woman’s libido relies on a complexity of factors such as emotional, environmental, and physical health, the drug is thought to be beneficial because it alters dopamine and serotonin levels in the brain. In studies, the female participants reported an increase in the number of sexually satisfying events each month, which is a promising statistic. Flibanserin was approved by the FDA in August 2015 and will be available to patients in October 2015.
